Vitamins and minerals have received a lot of credit over the last few years, but they are not magic pills. Nevertheless, it is very tempting to think of them that way. Anything that can help turn back time, look more radiant, help fight off conditions like cancer and heart disease, enhance your immune system, fight off illness, help you handle anxiety attack and boost your vitality certainly sounds pretty miraculous or magical.

Over the last few years, when people first began talking about the preventive potential of nutritional supplements, people concerned about their health started to clamber for vitamin pills and wanted to be told if they could possibly be used as part of a liver detox program. As it turned out, so did health consultants and even some people in the medical profession. For some time, it was starting to sound like megadoses of vitamins could cure anything. Simply load up with plenty of the life enhancing vitamins, and bingo! Perfect health was here to stay.

Well, that bubble burst soon enough. As we soon discovered, vitamin supplements, regardless of how powerful they may be, can’t cure everything. But they can do a lot. Research breakthroughs over just the past few years are bringing the subject to the fore again. Some of the things that scientists have discovered regarding the life enhancing powers of these nutrients will amaze you.

Here’s a brief overview of just one of the many studies on the subject. Scientists in the UK monitored 200 people working in management roles within the manufacturing industry. In a rigorous study, they gave one group a typical multivitamin/mineral supplement but the other half received a placebo with no nutritional value at all. At the end of eight weeks, the results showed that those taking the vitamins pills experienced a marked improvement in their quality of life.

Those who were receiving the placebo noticed no change at all. Researchers concluded that the supplements did actually make a positive impact on improving the employees stress levels, attitudes and general well being. And all from a simple vitamin and mineral supplement… with all those clinical trials to confirm their conclusions.

As more clinical trials take place and gather data showing spectacular health benefits from vitamins and minerals, especially when used to support a healthy detox diet, we’re right back where we were twenty years ago: eager to take advantage of all of this healing potential - yet confused by the overwhelming hype and dis-information out there. While the reasons for taking vitamins and minerals are now based on solid science, finding a supplement that lives up to it’s claims can be overwhelming.

Always discuss with your doctor prior to taking action on external health information received from non medical sources.
